Expertise

In 2005, the IZS_AM developed an international surveillance network for bluetongue in the Balkan area (East-BTNet). The web-based GIS tool developed under the East-BTNet network can be used to collect, represent and analyse data concerning also other animal diseases in which the GIS component could be of benefit (vector-borne diseases, but also direct contact infections like FMD, SVD, etc...). Collaboration with the national veterinary administrations and central diagnostic animal health Institutes of Romania, Croatia, Albania and Bulgaria is actually in place to include CSF data within the East-BTNet framework. This system will furnish precious data for the assessment of surveillance alternatives as well as the standardisation of epidemiological data to be collected.
