The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale dell'Abruzzo e del Molise "G. Caporale" (IZSA_M) is a public health institution, with the mission of providing cutting edge scientific and technological services in Animal Health, Veterinary Public Health and Environmental Protection. Customers of IZSA_M are national and international public and private sectors. Its main tasks are: research on etiology and pathogenesis of animal infectious and communicable diseases, diagnosis of animal diseases and zoonoses, microbiological and chemical laboratory tests on food of animal origin for human consumption and on animal foodstuff, epidemiological surveillance on animal health, animal production and food of animal origin, training of professional and technical operators in animal health, public health and animal production, technical and scientific co-operation with national and international veterinary research institutions, development of data processing and monitoring systems. IZSA&M is entrusted since 1991 with the functions of Italian reference centre for foreign diseases and Italian reference centre for veterinary epidemiology. IZSA_M is OIE collaborating centre for Veterinary Training, Epidemiology, Food Safety and Animal Welfare. IZSA_M is OIE Reference Laboratory for Bluetongue (BT), CBPP, Brucellosis.
In 2005, the IZS_AM developed an international surveillance network for bluetongue in the Balkan area (East-BTNet). The web-based GIS tool developed under the East-BTNet network can be used to collect, represent and analyse data concerning also other animal diseases in which the GIS component could be of benefit (vector-borne diseases, but also direct contact infections like FMD, SVD, etc...). Collaboration with the national veterinary administrations and central diagnostic animal health Institutes of Romania, Croatia, Albania and Bulgaria is actually in place to include CSF data within the East-BTNet framework. This system will furnish precious data for the assessment of surveillance alternatives as well as the standardisation of epidemiological data to be collected.
