Institute
The Institute of Virology has two departments and 23 scientific employees. One major field of research at the Institute of Virology are pestiviruses (CSFV, BDV and BVDV). In addition, the European Community Reference Laboratory (CRL) for CSF is also located at the premises. The functions and duties of the CRL are laid down in Annex IV of Council Directive 2001/89/EC adopted on October 23rd 2001.
Expertise
Major fields of research at the Institute of Virology are pathogenic mechanisms, epidemiology and the development of diagnostic methods for detection of Pestiviruses (CSFV, BDV and BVDV).The CRL is home of the world largest virus strain / isolate collection of CSF viruses. The CRL's regular activities include the organisation of inter-laboratory comparison tests with National Reference Laboratories all over Europe and Overseas. On request, strains of CSFV, BDV or BVDV, standardised sera and other reference reagents are supplied. In cooperation with the Institute of Virology, the epidemiological data concerning CSFV involved in outbreaks throughout the world have been computerized, and most of the viruses have been genetically typed. Current research and development efforts are focused on the molecular epidemiology of CSF, on pathogenesis studies using different CSFV isolates and on the development of sensitive and specific tools for the diagnosis of CSF.
