Partner 8: Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale Umbria e Marche (IZS-UM)

The Istituto Zooprofilattico Sperimentale Umbria e Marche (IZS-UM) belongs to National Sanitary System and is connected to international organizations such as WHO, OIE, FAO and UE. IZS-UM, furthermore works following the rules regarding the policy of service quality and applying UE Directives on inspection and evaluation of good laboratory practices. The main tasks assigned by national laws to IZS-UM are: experimental research; diagnosis of animal diseases and zoonoses; epidemiological surveillance; laboratory support for microbiological and chemical research on foods of animal origin; assistance, advise and information to breeders; production of biologicals; training of personnel skilled in zooprophylaxis. In the IZS-UM is located the National Swine Fever Laboratory (CEREP).

Expertise

The National Reference Centre for classical and African swine fever (CEREP) will be involved in the project. The main fields of activities of CEREP are diagnostic reagents development and production for national laboratories, molecular diagnosis, CSF vaccine production and molecular epidemiology. Recent research projects dealt with DNA-vaccination for CSF and the development of CSF virus recombinant proteins in plant. CEREP has high containment facilities (BSL-3) to perform laboratory and animal experiments with high contagious viral diseases like CSF and ASF. The main fields of current research activities are represented by CSF, BVD and ASF diagnosis, epidemiology and genetic typing.

Research activities will focus primarily on work package 5 in addition to WP 7, 8 and 9
