Institute
The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institute, Federal Research Institute for Animal Health (FLI) is an independent higher federal authority affiliated with the Federal Ministry for Food, Agriculture and Consumer Protection. The FLI publishes research results, cooperates with scientists and scientific institutions in Germany and worldwide, and fulfils the tasks assigned to it by the Animal Diseases Act.The FLI is organized in eleven institutions at seven sites. At the main site on the Isle of Riems the Institutes of Molecular Biology, of Diagnostic Virology, of Infectology and of Novel and Emerging Diseases are located. The Institute of Animal Nutrition resides at the site Braunschweig. The Institute of Animal Welfare and Animal Husbandry is located in Celle. The Institutes of Bacterial Infections and Zoonoses and of Molecular Pathogenesis are located in Jena. The Institute for Animal Breeding is situated in Mariensee. The Institute of Immunology is located in Tübingen and the Institute of Epidemiology in Wusterhausen.
Expertise
The Friedrich-Loeffler-Institut (FLI) is an independent supreme federal authority under the auspices of the Federal Ministry for Consumer Protection, Nutrition and Agriculture in Germany (BMELV). Its task is to produce the scientific basis to help decision making in the areas of nutrition, agriculture and forestry, and to expand scientific knowledge in these areas. The FLI performs research concerning animal virus diseases and related sciences. The FLI headquarters are at the Isle of Riems with six additional locations in Tübingen, Wusterhausen, Jena, Braunschweig, Cell and Mariensee. It consists of eleven institutes, where the FLI Insel Riems (Institute of Molecular Biology, Institute of Infectology, Institute of Diagnostic Virology) and the FLI Wusterhausen (Institute of Epidemiology) are involved in CSF-related projects. In total, the FLI has about 600 permanent employees of which about 170 are scientists. The FLI hosts the National Reference Laboratory for Classical Swine Fever within the Institute of Diagnostic Virology. The Institute of Epidemiology is involved in research projects concerning the occurrence and dynamics of animal diseases in Germany, Europe and world-wide. The national animal disease notification system (TSN) and Animal Movement system of the EU (ANIMO) are hosted and maintained by the institute. In addition, control measures against CSF including the oral immunization of wild boar have been assessed extensively at the FLI. Several OIE reference laboratories are represented by the FLI as well as the OIE collaborating Centre for Zoonoses in Europe.
