The Universidad Complutense of Madrid (UCM) www.ucm.es is one of the largest universities world-wide with 88.177 students and 6.402 Professors. The Veterinary Faculty of the UCM (http://www.ucm.es/info/webvet) is the main and oldest veterinary faculties in Spain and owns one of the most important diagnostic units for the serological, virological and molecular diagnosis of infectious diseases, as well as one of the main veterinary hospitals for small and large animals. The faculty has a biosecurity Level 3 laboratory with animal's facility for animal infection with Levels 3 classified agents. Finally, our Veterinary Faculty has been positively evaluated by the EAEVE (European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education, (www.eaeve) in 1998 and again in 2006. The Department of Animal Health of the Veterinary School is currently in charge of education and research on infectious and parasitic diseases of animals, as well as general and clinical microbiology, epidemiology and preventive medicine.

Expertise

Prof. Jose Sanchez-Vizcaino. Is a world wide well known expert in animal's infectious disease, working in the field of animal health for more than 30 years. His main activities have been related with the development of new diagnostic technologies, vaccines and eradication models for the control of several old OIE lists's A diseases. The work of Prof. Sanchez-Vizcaino was of great impact in the eradication of ASF and AHS in Spain. He is "Expert-consulter" for the F.A.O on infectious diseases control and eradication programs. As well as he is expert for African swine fever and African horse sickness for the World Organization for Animal Health (OIE). He was involved in the development of the Spanish sanitary alarm program for control of animal diseases as well as in the development of the epidemiological models for their control and eradication. He has coordinated different Spanish and EU projects related with former List A diseases such a: ASFV, CSFV, BTV, AHSV and vesicular diseases, as well as on prion infections. He is the author of more than one hundred fifty publications in international scientific magazines and several chapters in books of international prestige, and run several international training courses in epidemiology, preventive medicine and infectious diseases.

Role and contribution in the project

Research activities will focus primarily on work packages 6 and 8 in addition to WP 7, 9 and 13
